On 27th November St. John's was
treated to an entertaining evening when 22 members of "Ukes at the
Wharf" performed a concert of music hall and other popular songs in our
church hall. The band was formerly known as the Ormskirk Ukelele Band, and the
performers included our own John Cotterall. The programme included such old
favourites as The Blackpool Belle, It's a Long Way to Tipperary, Pack Up Your
Troubles, Take Good Care of Yourself, and Ain't She Sweet, and some more modern
songs such as Slade's So Here it is, Merry Christmas. And all to the catchy
rhythms created by a small army of ukelelists.
There were about 50 parishioners and friends in the audience, which was a
testament to their enthusiastic support for this church social event because
the weather was bleak and could have persuaded a lot of people to stay at home.
There was much audience participation and the performance was well received.
And what a meal was provided! Cornish pasties and beans, followed by
cheesecake. We know how to do things in style at St. John's! Thanks to all who
took part in organising this event, particularly Sally Wright who operated the
projector and even oversaw the serving of the baked beans to make sure they
were just right.
Watch out for further events at St. John's and please do support them if you can. They help to build up our fellowship and they provide good opportunities to have some simple pleasure in company with friends.
