The
Southport Soup Kitchen was very grateful for the donations of food that members
of St. John’s
donated at the Harvest service. Of
course their need for food is on going so we have decided to collect food, on
their behalf, regularly.
We
wish to encourage you to add one or two items to your weekly shopping and bring
them to church each week. The food will
be collected at the back of church and taken down to the soup kitchen
periodically.
You may be wondering what the Southport Soup Kitchen is!
According
to their website
“The
Southport Soup Kitchen is a registered charity. It was founded in 2003. Its
purpose is quite simply to help the homeless and vulnerable that live in the
area. The Soup Kitchen is open on a Saturday and Sunday from 11:30am to 2pm and
is staffed and managed by volunteers. The Soup Kitchen receives no formal money
and relies on donations and grant money.
The
Soup Kitchen receives a lot of help from the different churches and local
people around Southport . When The Soup Kitchen
is open it serves healthy food and offers a warm environment to the people who
come into it. The Soup Kitchen would like to offer more to the people of Southport but does not have the money or the permission
to do so.”
In
addition to the meals that the soup kitchen provides they also provide food
parcels to help support the homeless and vulnerable throughout the week.
Your next question may be, “What kind
of things do they need?”
They
need such things as tins of corn beef, stew, chilli, chicken curry, apple pies
etc. for their guests but for the families that volunteers go out and give food
to anything you think useful to a family.
(A more comprehensive list of items can be found at the back of church.
Please
support this appeal and if you do not feel able to contribute actual food please support the Southport
Soup Kitchen, their volunteers and guests in your prayers. Anything that you give or do will be much
appreciated.
