Ringing the bell to help herald the beginning of the Olympics

At 8.12 a.m. Big Ben chimed for three minutes along with thousands of bells, large and small, all over the country.  As part of this national community, St. John's bell rang out too.

The idea was conceived by the Turner Prize winning artist, Martin Creed.  He told BBC Breakfast "It's a piece of music for a special occasion."

Apologies to Cath and Ann who were alarmed to hear the bell ringing but it was a last minute decision!
