WOW3 Holiday Club -Day 2

We began the morning by blue washing over the fish we had drawn yesterday!

Having discussed the "Water of Life" on Monday, today the focus was on "Water Power".  Looking back on it now we seemed to have had a very busy morning!

John demonstrated a static steam engine - which was fascinating.  It went so fast until it was coupled to a "machine" which it drove.

He also showed us his Powerwasher!  Maud's car has never looked so clean!  He also cleaned the back step of the hall.

Sal showed us how water freezing takes up more space - which can burst pipes.  We are going to test this by putting a bottle of water in the freezer!

We are getting better at playing the "Water flutes"....

.... and made some lovely, calming sounds with bottles of water.

We investigated the power water has to "dissolve" some white powders!

Have they....
 .....disappeared?

It tastes like "The sea"!!!

Then there was the power of water to get things clean .....

..... but that was very hard work!

We experimented with water wheels .....

..... and played "Water skittles".

With Christine, we proved that a house built on rock would stand much longer than a house built on sand when the "rain" fell for a given time!!

We then sang the song - "The wise man and the foolish man"

At the end of the morning Sal explained how Jesus had given the examples of "The Wiseman and the foolish man".  We all agreed that we would rather be like the wise man, than the foolish man!  Jesus said that meant we need to listen and act on what God tells us - not just do our own thing whatever, like the foolish man!  [Matthew 7 v 24-29]

We ended the morning by singing the song that we are going to sing on Sunday!
These are the experts ......

...... but we are all getting much better at it!!!!

WOW3 Holiday Club - Day 1

Appropriately enough, the theme for our Holiday Club this year is water - wet, wet, wet!
We began by looking at God's wonderful world as seen from outer space and noting how what a lot of the surface is covered in water.  We discussed how vital for life, as we know it water, is and noted how little fresh, liquid water there is on earth compared to the total amount of water!
Yet it is this water that all land animals and plants depend on (and are largely made up of).

We then broke into groups to explore this life giving water!  How not to waste it, or mess it up, and how to ensure that as many people as possible had access to clean, fresh water.

We planted some bean seeds with no soil to see if they would grow if all we gave them was water!?!

It was trickier than you might think to position the beans so that they didn't drop to the bottom.

All we have to do now is keep our seeds damp (but not too wet) for long enough to see if they grow!  [I hope someone will email me a picture if theirs does grow!]

We also played a giant "drains and ladders" game to enable us to talk about what we could do to save and generally look after water.

[The winners!]

In addition we learned a new song (and some actions to go with it);

tried to play some water-flutes (which was a lot harder than it looks);
played other games;

made some jelly (which, hopefully will have set by tomorrow!)

and made some posters to encourage people to look after water!

Also, during the morning, we looked at the work of Wateraid.  We were shocked by the number of children that die from water related illness every day and the bad effect that drinking dirty water has on many other children - their growth and education.  We then agreed to join their "Buckets of pennies for buckets of water" initiative.  [For more information on Wateraid go to  http://www.wateraid.org/uk/   and visit the Learn Zone.]

Finally, our Bible Story today was "The Woman at the Well" (which is taken from John 4 v 3-42).
This story is depicted in the bottom of the East Window in our church.

Below this blog I have posted some of the posters that the children made at WOW3 today!

Following Jesus to the cross and on to Easter 2012

Maundy Thursday

On the evening of Thursday 5th April, The Reverend Harry Ross, and about 20 parishioners, gathered around a table in the small hall to break bread and share wine in remembrance of the last supper of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Harry encouraged us to imagine what it must have been like to be at that original supper. How would Christ (knowing, as he did, everything that was about to happen to him) be feeling! What about Peter - so confident in his ability to stand up for Jesus, when he was told that he would deny he even knew Jesus that very night? What about Judas - when he realised Jesus knew that he was in the process of betraying Him? What about John - the disciple most sensitive to the nuances of Jesus or any of the other disciples - confused and, as yet, unable to understand what Jesus was telling them? We tried to imagine how they might be feeling as Jesus shared bread and wine and spoke to them of what was about to happen.

We then reflected on how the weaknesses of these men were also present in ourselves and prayed for forgiveness and help.

Good Friday

On the morning of Friday 6th April, Peter Davies led a service of hymns, readings and reflection.

The hymns and readings traced the terrible events of the day on which Jesus was falsely accused, tried and crucified nearly 2000 years ago. The reflections were based on a series of carefully selected, recent actions or situations (such as “The Scottish School Teacher”, “The man who embezzled his employer” and “The death of Sam”) which chimed in with the Biblical events. The juxtaposition of these was very powerful and the congregation was moved to compassion, repentance, forgiveness and I’m sure in some cases action in their own lives.

Easter Saturday Praise and Prayer

On Saturday 7th April Joyce Hunt led the Service of Praise and Prayer. One might imagine there was not much left to say before Easter after the powerful services of the previous two days! Indeed, Joyce said that they had considered cancelling Praise and Prayer this month but had a good reason for not doing so which would be revealed at the end of the service!

Joyce reminded us that nothing was known of what the disciples and those close to Jesus were doing on the day between the crucifixion (which we remember on Good Friday) and the resurrection (which we celebrate on Easter Day). However, she reminded us that Luke says of “the women who had come with him from Galilee” that, on the Thursday, after they had seen where the body was laid, “… they prepared spices and ointments”. But they could not anoint the body, as was the custom, because “On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment”. (Luke 23 v 55, 56)

We were also reminded that on that day the chief priests and Pharisees were far from resting and praying as they, above all people should have been! (Does the expression “practise what you preach” come to mind?) In fact they were petitioning Pilot to put a guard on the tomb of Jesus because they were afraid that Jesus’ disciples would steal the body and pretend that Jesus had risen from the dead as he had said he would do. (See Matthew 27 v 62 – 66)

At the end of the service it was finally announced that it was one of our church warden’s – i.e. Margery Tasker’s - 80th birthday!

We went through to breakfast and to celebrate Margery’s birthday with a beautiful balloon, champagne and cake!
Happy Birthday Margery!

Easter Sunday

On Sunday 8th April Harry was back (at the 9.00 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. services) to challenge us with an Easter message and help us to celebrate the miracle of Easter.

Thank you very much for joining us, Harry, for this – the most important celebration of the Christian year!

The 10.30 a.m. service was also made more special by the inspiring singing of the specially assembled choir who had been practising for weeks.

Finally Easter Day at St. John’s concluded with a 6.00 p.m. Easter Songs of Praise.

This was lead by Clive who furnished the congregation with the fascinating stories behind the songs that we sang. The songs were chosen for what they had to say to us now. It was good to have the opportunity to focus on the meaning of the words. The songs varied from, amongst many others, the traditional, such as “When I survey the wondrous cross” (17thC) and “O Jesus I have promised” (19thC) to the more recently written “Meekness and Majesty” (20thC) and “All My Days” (20thC) sung beautifully as a solo by Lucy Wright.

The service concluded with an epilogue on making “a come back” and of course, the most wonderful “come back" of all!

We departed for fellowship and Easter “goodies” in the hall after singing the final, timeless, hymn “Jesus Christ is Risen today” (words written 1708) which just goes to show that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13 v 8)

A BIG THANK YOU to everybody who worked so hard over the Easter period in the absence of a vicar:- those who organised and prepared services, those who preached, those who cleaned, stripped and redecorated the church, those who donated or arranged the flowers (which were glorious), those who prepared food and drink, those who prayed, those who sang, all those who attended, those who offered lifts so that others could attend, and those who cleared up afterwards.
May God bless you all.

Christmas Tree Festival "Thank You Evening"

On the evening of Friday 27th January 2012 the church hall was full when parishioners welcomed and thanked the representatives of the charities which supported St John’s Christmas Tree Festival. More than 90 people gathered together in a very pleasant and sociable occasion.

The event commenced with some well known songs being performed by Julie Ann Bevan and three of her highly talented pupils, Harry Gascoigne, Lydia Seed and Laura Bevan. Harry sang “Leaning on a Lamp” and “Flash, Bang, Wallop” and played the lively “Wild Horseman” on the piano. Lydia performed “Oom Pah Pah” and “Honey Bun”, and Laura sand “As Long As He Needs Me”.

We then enjoyed a buffet supper which was organised by Joyce Hunt, after which John Feneley, the mastermind behind the Christmas Tree Festival, thanked all the charities and the sponsors for supporting the event. The total amount which was donated to the charities during the Festival was £1260 and in addition the sponsors contributed £1404 by paying for all the trees. John also thanked all who supported the Christmas Market which had been organised by Sylvia Kent. The Festival and the Market had been a great success, both financially and in terms of outreach, and John looks forward to the next Festival in December.

The evening concluded with more musical entertainment from Harry, Laura and Lydia, accompanied by Julie Ann. Harry sang “Unlucky Men” and “Nicest Kids in Town” and played “Stroll On”, Lydia performed “I Want To Sing In Opera” and “Mama, I’m A Big Girl Now”, and Laura sang “Someone Like You”.

St John’s thanks John Feneley and all the charities who took part in the Festival. Without John the Festival would not have happened, and without the charities  it would have no purpose. We are delighted that so many of them were represented at this Thank You event, and we thank Julie Ann and her three pupils for providing such excellent entertainment.
[Thank you to Stuart for submitting all this as, sadly, I was unable to attend what sounds to have been an enjoyable evening because we were away.  This is also the reason for the delay in posting - sorry!]

Festival Entertainment – Saturday 9th December 2011

Following the official opening, visitors to the Charity Christmas Tree Festival were seasonally entertained by Julie Ann Carr and her talented pupils.
With songs ranging from “Christmas through your eyes”, through “Santa Baby” and “I wish it could be Christmas” to “Walking in The Air” and “Away in a Manger” with plenty else between.

Each of the performers got their moment in the spot-light.

Well done everybody!

In addition to all the singing.....

....Megan even played the piano to the delighted audience.

Thank you for coming.

We hope you all have a lovely Christmas
